KCRA Investigates Sushi Restaurants

In an investigative report aired Wednesday, February 6 at 11pm on Sacramento's NBC affiliate KCRA 3, Mikuni was found to be the the only sushi restaurant tested not deliberately deceiving their customers. Every other sushi restaurant was found to be substituting an inexpensive low quality fish, Tilapia, for the more expensive Red Snapper known as Tai in Japanese.

In the report, KCRA’s DNA expert stated, “(Tilapia) is not any way shape or form a correct substitution (for Red Snapper), and it’s certainly illegal by any standards.” KCRA’s investigative report also found that “there really isn’t any regulation for species substitution” and restaurant owners have final say in deciding whether to serve their customers what they’ve ordered.

"Mikuni will always stand behind the quality of our food and we will always serve our customers what they’ve paid for," stated Derrick Fong, Mikuni CEO.
